Almost used up the last of my RTV to put mold a copy of those wrought iron pieces. Still setting in the garage today, so hopefully it’s fully vulcanised by this evening. Also a little concerned that my RTV has aged. Cast a few more Hydrostone pieces as well. Just waiting for some 30.5 MDF squares and it’ll be all on. Griff and Em are *still* at the beach those slackers! I figure I can put together maybe four tiles at a stretch. That gives me a 2′x2′ playing area – or a quarter of the final desired table – hopefully by the end of Feb.

My wife picked me up some Canola Cooking Spray last night when she went to Pak’n'Save, so I prepped the ‘Gothic Graveyard‘ and mixed some resin for pouring. My resin has definitely aged – which I guess isn’t a surprise since it had expired when I purchased it from ModelAir. Normally this stuff is supposed to have a 10-15 min pouring time. However once I’d mixed the pot it started to get warm (not a good sign!) so I splashed it over the mold and slapped the CD cover down. I could see some trapped air bubbles but kept my fingers crossed. 10 minutes later it had hardened enough to get the cast out – which I guess is an advantage to using air-exposed resin. All of the wrought iron pieces cast well enough to be used as masters for a custom copy which I intend to make. Resin casting attacks and will eventually destroy the RTV which is not good considering I’m paying around $55NZ for each mold. Hmmm I need some more RTV and a fresh batch of resin – that’s about $90 worth of materials. The rest of the Graveyard mold casts nicely with Hydrostone which gives me some very classy grave stones and other pieces. I’ve put the Bell Tower mold away for now, will have a look once I’ve made some progress on the modular tiles. Still casting a round of molds at least once a night and have about half a bucket of Hydrostone left.

Dang, my wife has txted me that my new molds have arrived…question is do I want to make a Bell Tower now or not :). Also need to make custom mold of wrought iron railings to avoid resin damaging mold! Wonder if I can get away with Hydrostone for a single cast to mold from?

Occurs to me I’m going to have to use the last of my RTV to put together a custom mold from some Hirst Arts pieces. I need a lot more 1/2″ fieldstone squares and 1″x1/2″ fieldstone strips to break up the regular 1 1/2″ fieldstone flagstones I have. To the garage of destruction boy wonder!

Casting casting casting…just building up piles of Hydrostone tiles in the garage…waiting for Griff and Em to return because apparently the framers Em works for have a nifty machine for cutting squares. So I’m hoping she can cut me like 16 exactly square 30.5 x 30.5cm 3mm MDF tiles. That would make creating the modular table considerably easier! Then I’ll crack into glueing and painting…

Have already cast enough pieces for at least one complete 1′ tile. Considering making a few custom pieces for some variety and adding large damaged ‘dirt’ sections to the tiles to reduce the number of casts req’d per tile and break up the regular tile pattern. The regular pattern is a problem of course because it allows players to guess charge ranges etc. by tile counting. So could have two tiles assembled but unpainted by the end of Jan.

Right, I think I’ll go with 30.5 x 30.5cm (1′) tiles and a regular peg structure like that Mordheim table on the web. The advantage of using regular pegs is the table will be nice and sturdy. Anyway before I start building a table I’ll have to get some tiles together! I’ll aim for a 3×4 tile table which corresponds to 4′x3′. A bit smaller than a regular Mordheim table but will be laden with lots of terrain in the end so hopefully that won’t be an issue. Damn that’s 12 tiles I have to make…might have it done by the end of 2004!
