Clipped away at those plastic aquarium plants last night and figured out a good way to secure them to an MDF base. Think I’ll make a handful of curved hedges and a scattering of shrubberies that should be good for both Mordheim and WHFB. Some more light detailing on the top floor of the Coach House for Mordheim.
Finally made it to Acorn Models in the weekend and picked up two shakers of Woodland Scenic’s flock. Grabbed ‘light green’ and ‘burnt grass’. The Woodland Scenics flock colours are very natural because they’re used mainly by model rail-roaders. Much more muted than the horrid neon green ‘grass’ that GW favour. Anyway, flocked and varnished both hills so they’re complete.
Used both hills in a game of WHFB I played against Griff’s Brettonians on Friday night as well. The hills played quite nicely I thought, with Griff’s Palladin Knight standing on the top of one at one point, looking very ummm Brettonian?
However the game was a total disaster for the Vampire Counts and I’m beginning to wonder if they just suck basically. Tried hordes of Zombies and that turned out to be a waste of time, mainly because of their strike last rule. So it seems that both Zombies and Skeletons pretty much stink as core troops. The Grave Guard proved their worthlessness yet again. They can’t withstand a charge by Brettonians (without me purchasing a whole lot more expensive metal figures) so can only really be used as flanking troops, but they’re no good for that either because Infantry are just too slow. The Brettonians control the table and charge whoever they like. Although there was a funny little ‘dance of death’ with a group of 24 Zombies scaring off a bunch of Knights Errant until they finally decided to charge (oh and then wiped out the Zombies in 2 turns). Might paint up the four Fell Bats I own and see if they do any better for flanking units.
Griff reckons I’m just bitching, but considering there’s really very little the VC can do against Brent’s Chaos Warriors that just leaves the Brettonians to fight. So if they’re dicking me it looks like it’s going to be a really fun campaign from here on in.
Also picked up $10 worth of plastic aquarium plants I found at Spotlight while my wife was shopping for quilt backing. Looks like they might be very handy for some Mordheim or WHFB terrain. Maybe a few hedges or shrubs. Griff could probably use them to detail his swamp/jungle terrain.
I was briefly tempted by the new GW ‘How to Make Wargames Terrain’. However on further investigation it turns out the book only has a couple of good ideas anyway and certainly not worth $55NZ! Maybe at $20NZ I would have picked it up. Their tips are strictly for the novice terrain creator. I do like the look of their roads and rivers however. Might have to create a few of those for WHFB terrain.
Added ‘on this day’ to this WordPress blog a couple of days ago. Req’d some PHP hacking but it’s actually turned out to be quite useful. I’m almost inspired to return to those old posts and back-fill the detail with some photos of the resulting pieces etc.
Drybrushed larger hill, so it’s ready for inking and polyurethaning. Must sort out flock this weekend. Did a little detail work on the top floor of the Coach House. Few more hours of work and this Mordheim building will be completed. Re-subscribed to White Dwarf last night. 18 months for $150. That ends in Feb 2006.
Inked and polyurethaned the smaller hill. Hopefully paint coverage is sufficient to protect polystyrene from the spray. Drybrushed rock face of larger hill. Must secure some brownish flock. Really must get these hills out of the way then finish off the Mordheim Coach House top floor.
Drybrushed the smaller hill. Believe I will ink and varnish it before attempting to apply any flock. Once I get around to flocking I’ll try PVA underneath with an over-spray of watered down PVA followed by a vicious varnishing. Possibly with that polyurethane spray lurking in the garage. Large hill is also base coated and ready for drybrushing. Both should be playable by this weekend Griff.
Busy most of this weekend, but did manage to pick up some test pots from Resene. ‘Digeredoo’ is a pretty close match to GW’s ‘Scorched Brown’. A little redder perhaps but good enough for me.
Gravelled the larger hill and based it black. Base coated the smaller hill and started painting it. Could almost get away without flock because the textured paint I used to prime the hill makes a lovely dirt texture with a bit of dry brushing.
Just found some interesting linkage off the Hirst Arts forum to a German miniatures company that makes resin window sets specifically designed to be ‘pushed through’ 5mm foam card. They’re two sided pieces that you presumably glue together. Check out these products. This is the company that also makes some great gargoyles.
I don’t know about the gargoyles, but sculpting and casting something similar to those windows is certainly within my abilities. Hmmm, a future project maybe?
