The Heresy Miniatures giant spider arrived yesterday via post. That was pretty quick! A week’s turn around from Great Britain. I hope the Freebooter stuff turns up from Germany just as fast. Man I like getting stuff in the letterbox. It’s like every second day is Christmas!

The giant spider is a lovely figure and I played around with it last night in combination with the Brettonian Knights I picked up in the evening. I reckon I can just about squeeze it onto a standard cavalry base, with a few legs sticking out here and there in a suitably spiderish fashion. Grabbed an old seated Lahmian Vampire I got from TradeMe, trimmed her saddle away and applied a bit of rough green stuff so she sits on the beast’s back like this:

Spider Vampire

I need to apply a little more green stuff to create some more flowing material where the saddle used to be. Ideally I’d like to be able to pop her on and off the spider…so I can re-use it as an unmounted Mordheim beastie! Be great for a ‘Hunt the Monster’ multi-player scenario.

Also eyeballed the plastic Brettonian Knights. I reckon with a bit of light conversion they’ll do nicely as Death Knights. First of course the head swaps with Zombie and Skeleton heads for the Knights. Then I think a bit of cutting, drilling and green stuff around the base of the horses’ barding to give it a more ragged, rotten appearance. Then I think I’ll cut away most of the small shield details and cover the damage with texture stamped skulls. Also need to sort out a fairly flat, lightly detailed skull to stamp on the horses’ barding shields.

First however I think I should paint up the unit of 6 Dire Wolves. These guys can be painted damned fast with a little grey drybrushing and detailing around the mouth. Will scrub and prime them tonight. I seem to have a lot of projects on the boil again. Must actually start making some progress rather than spawning new tasks!

Finished drybrushing the entire fortress. Now it’s down to detailing. Built three balsa wood trapdoors for the towers and glued them in place ready for painting. Thinking of sculpting a simple little green stuff ‘hinge’ set I can cast in resin for trapdoor detailing. Would be good for balsa doors too.

We won $757 on Lotto last weekend so I’ve just ordered two more molds (for $100NZ) from Hirst Arts, #210 cobblestone tiles and #240 wood shingle roof mold. The cobblestone tiles will come in very useful for making roads and those Mordheim tiles I started earlier this year. The wood shingle I plan to cast in resin and use for Mordheim and WHFB roof tops.

Might pick up a box of those new Brettonian Knights to night as well to convert to Death Knights for the Vampire Counts. That’s probably enough reckless spending on modelling crap. The rest of my share of the loot will probably go on new shoes…

Interesting online article about mold creation for resin casting.

A new Hirst Arts reseller has just started on the web. CastleKits (www.castlekits.com) is an excellent way to order entire Hirst Arts kits, or to get a closer look at single castings of each mold as they re-sell individual casts. I ordered a handful of single casts of various molds I’ve been considering purchasing for a mere $16NZ! I can only hope their customer service is on par with Bruce Hirst’s.

Alas their web-site didn’t include shipping prices to NZ which I’ve since discovered would more than double the price of the order. Ah well, I guess there has to be a downside to living in our island paradise :).

After having a look in the back of the new 4th Edition 40k rulebook I was inspired to create some new 40k terrain. So sliced up a bunch of polystyrene into pillars for new desert terrain.

Still painting the fortress. All walls and towers are now based with ‘Barrista’ and ready for drybrushing.

Drybrushed first layer onto gate house and second wall last night. Built ramparts for other two towers from simple fieldstone blocks. Means there’s two sets of towers with slightly different ramparts but flat ramparts will probably be easier to build hoardings for anyway. Will spray prime all remaining fortress parts tonight.

Ordered that spider I mentioned below this morning. Wonder how long it’ll take to get here? I figure what’s $30NZ and the exchange rate is the best it’s ever been for quite some time.

Also ordered some wooden window sets and gargoyles from Freebooter Miniatures. It’s a bit more pricey at $50NZ since they’re a German company and I have to pay Euros plus a rather high shipping fee but they’ll be very useful for Mordheim terrain.

Foundry miniatures also do a great line of ‘Cut-throats and Pirates‘, alas I currently have no need for any. Griff, didn’t you think about doing a Pirate warband for Mordheim?
