Whitewash City Paper Terrain I recently received a copy of the Gutshot Western Skirmish rules that I’ll be reviewing for Tabletop Gaming News – so keep an eye out for that if you’re interested. Unfortunately I have absolutely no suitable terrain for a Western game. So I picked up a $15.99us copy of Eric Hotz’sWhitewash City‘ PDFs from RPG Now.

This ‘Pioneer City‘ set gives you an entire 30mm scale Western town and I’m quite impressed with Mr Hotz’s work. These designs are apparently all based on historic buildings and it certainly shows once you put a few together. All you need is a hot dry wind and a few tumbleweeds to complete the feel of a miniature Western town.

The signage on the front of the buildings adds a lot to that feel as well, however I do wonder if it detracts from the general usefulness of each building. Mind you with a bit of work with your favourite image editor I’m sure you could create some suitable replacements to add more variety to the buildings.

Later: Actually I see Mr Hotz already has an several extra sets of signs for sale.

Artizan Designs 28mm German NCO Well I couldn’t restrain myself any further and ordered some 28mm scale WWII Germans from Artizan Designs today. In particular, three of the smaller ‘collectors packs’ of four figures each:

I realise that Pulp is set in the 1930′s, between the two World Wars but couldn’t resist picking up some Germans for those Egyptian tomb dig scenarios. They’ll also be handy for the ‘Quest for La Calavera Negra de la Luna’ downloadable scenario from Pulp Heroes.

Now all I need is a suitably academic adventurer with a bullwhip, a feisty brunette and a large jolly Egyptian digger…

Tabletop Gaming News Well I’m officially a contributer to Tabletop Gaming News now, having just posted my first figure review this week.

I looked at the Celtos King of the Wild figure which is a very nice 28mm metal set. Check out the review for the details.

As I don’t play Celtos I doubt the figures will remain together as a set. I’ll probably end up using the fanged horse as a Nightmare for my Lahmian Vampire Counts Warhammer army. The cool little doggie will be my first ‘Pulp’ figure, playing either as a Heroic Dog character (from the Pulp Heroes downloads) or a more generic guard dog. The rider will probably just be placed in my bitz box.

Wig's World Gothic Dungeon Wig is a regular poster in the Hirst Arts forums and has recently updated his hobbyist web site – Wig’s World.

He’s got some good galleries and articles up there. I’m tempted to try his modular dungeon room design in the future. Possibly mixed with the foam cavern system as well.

It was the ‘wash’ based paint scheme Wig used for his gothic dungeon that originally inspired me to try a similar technique for my recent piece of CD based 40k terrain.

SS Zombies Verdammnis is a great ‘alternate history’ WWII 28mm website with a very pulp feel and it includes a custom set of rules to use with Devil Dog’s ‘Dogs of War’ system.

Unfortunately Devil Dog Design no longer seem to have a web site – at least none that I can find. That doesn’t really matter because I’ll be playing .45 Adventures and just using this great site for ideas.

Verdammnis has some excellent galleries with superb terrain. I find pictures like these are always great inspiration for my own terrain efforts and let’s face it how could you dislike well painted Zombie Hitler Youth, or Nazi UFOs?

The figures on this site are from the ‘Graven Images‘ UK manufacturer. In particular the Gotterrustung and Gotterdamerung lines.

Hirst Arts Cathedral Pieces I’m still casting slowly for the Hirst Arts Cathedral but have made some progress compared to my last post. I certainly have enough pieces to start assembling the major parts. However two sticking points remain: I still have to make about 20 casts of the Gothic Belltower and I need to sort out a base for the whole piece as I’d like to sort out the floorplan first before assembling walls and bell towers.

It’s going to be a real challenge to keep everything straight and level. I have a bit of room for errors however since I do intend to build a partially ruined cathedral without a complete roof. For painting I plan to use the same scheme as the recently finished 40k CD terrain as I think that’ll look good for Mordheim and 40k.

For detailing I am considering embedding rare earth magnets in the statuary alcoves and try putting together two sets of ruined statues. One themed to 40k – so lots of old Space Marines and some Guardsmen, and the other themed to Mordheim/Warhammer Fantasy – so lots of armored Knights and some Flagellants painted like stone. I also wonder if I can put together a suitable set of iconography with a large Imperial Eagle or a Sigmarite Hammer over the entrance. Hmmm well see how much of that actually gets achieved!

Ventures in Argent Ventures in Argent is a cooperative multi-player Fantasy boardgame set in the World of Argent that requires no GM so you can also play it solitaire.

The game is currently in ‘beta testing’ which means is you can go to the game site and download a single large archive containing all of the game rules, board and play pieces in PDF format. Then just print them out and play!

I haven’t tried the game yet but the production quality seems quite high and the PDFs are decorated with some lovely ‘wood cut’ style illustrations. Check it out – I mean the price is right!
