Yes I have seriously considered the 1/48th scale, both for vehicles and airplanes too! The only sticking point is finding a local supplier.

My Opel Blitzes actually arrived last night and they’re lovely. I’ll be posting about them next week sometime. Seems there’s a lot going on with my hobby at the moment!

Along with the crates and barrels you should be set. I've got my eye on the Copplestone archaelogist with the dinosaur fossils for that series of scenarios as well. I've been looking at the Tamiya 1/48 scale line of miliatary models as a possibility since it has the citreon staff car and the kubelwagon. Would you be inclined to consider that scale as well or do you think they might look a bit off? With Amazing War Stories out now I can definitely see more military models being useful to have to run everything from an airfield raid to scurrying through the village trying to dodge the angry locals and the small delegation of troops supporting the evil archaelogist's dig.
