So no visitors favor painting 40mm/54mm scale figures? There’s some excellent examples for sale, like Hasslefree’s 40mm Artemis (she’s a naked warrior goddess so may not be safe for work), the new Femme Militant line (annoying Flash site though) and the failed Games Workshop Inquisitor 54mm. These GW figures tempted me, until they starting releasing the excellent 28mm Inquisitor retinue figures for 40k that is. I mean, why play Inquisitor with 54mm figures and a whole new set of terrain when I can just reuse my 28mm figures and existing terrain? Even so 54mm Inquisitor figures still crop up on TradeMe regularly and I’ve nearly grabbed one or two for display painting.
I myself am torn between the 28mm and 15mm scales. 28mm figures can have a lot of detail and be quite enjoyable to paint, but I’m such a slow painter because I like to try and achieve a reasonable paint job on each and every figure. For this reason alone I suspect I’m slowly swinging towards the 15mm camp, particularly after discovering how quickly one can paint an entire 1500pt WWII Flames of War force if you put your mind to it. This is the real reason both Flashpoint’s 17mm Moderns and Corvus Bellis’ 15mm Ancients attract me.

Artemis is a very nice model, but I can’t justify starting a whole new scale for a single model.
Maybe that should be my next poll: Do you display paint?
I’ve never got to the point of purchasing a figure solely for display painting but I can see the attraction of simply attempting the best possible paint job you’re capable of (and maybe trying a few new techniques to boot).
Artemis wouldn’t look out of place as statuary with a marble finish in a 40k city ruin imho. Maybe she’d need a discrete Imperial Eagle or two though :)
I mostly display paint these days in the sense that I rarely get around to gaming. But my tendency to collect “sets” leads me to focusing on painting gangs/teams/warbands/occasional armies.
My hasslefree purchases are self justified in that at some point I’ll use them as an escher gang for necromunda.
Maybe
Makes sense to me! I’ve long entertained a hobbyist’s fantasy of scratching up a Necromunda Scavvie gang from WHFB Zombies, Ghouls and greenstuff. Maybe with a Heresy Miniatures Ogre in there for the heavy support…
I enjoy the hobby aspect more than gaming (particularly for GW systems) but do still enjoy rolling the dice and moving away from GW systems has given me a lot of gaming pleasure in recent years with Flames of War, Pulp .45 Adventure etc.
pulp .45 has me incredibly tempted at the moment, and if they ever release some cthulhu-esque stuff I’ll be right there.
Bob, I’m not sure if they can do a Cthulhu-esque source book because of licensing restrictions since Chaosium still publish the Cthulhu RPG game don’t they?
Having said that though .45 Adventure would be great fun in a Cthulhu setting (I used to play Chaosium’s RPG game years ago) and it wouldn’t be too hard to come up with some suitable stats for Deep Ones etc.
*resists urge to start yet another game system*
