I couldn’t let this story slide past: THQ (creators of Dawn of War) have extended their license with Games Workshop to produce a Massively Multiplayer Online game set in the 40k universe.
After seeing the Warhammer Fantasy MMO (from another publisher) dead in the water it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out. Personally I think if anybody can pull off a decent 40k MMO it’s THQ as they’ve already proven they can treat the 40k IP appropriately by creating the excellent Dawn of War RTS series of games.
Game balance will be interesting though, considering each faction in the 40k universe essentially represents the pinnacle of their particular race’s warrior class and of course everyone will want to play ‘The Emperor’s Finest’! Details of actual game play at this point are nil – the Gamespot article above includes an ‘interview’ that is essentially a bunch of PR boiler plate.

Tsk tsk Warhammer online is still going ahead just witha publisher that doesn’t suck

Yes well, I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s never a good portent for any game when the publisher changes mid-stream.
And lets face it a Warhammer Fantasy MMO has an uphill battle to fight against the behemoth that is World of Warcraft.
Whereas a Warhammer 40k MMO is an entirely different genre. In fact have we seen a decent science fiction MMO that isn’t ship based yet?
Anacrchy online nothing like turn based esk shooting.
I can’t see how a 40k MMO will work. You can play an individual character in a MMO right?
Bags not play as an individual IG guardsman with a pistol up against a Wraithlord…
You would be a god among men though. Your a PC so basically you can be all that.
Aside from that they don’t ride horses (often) and buying a tank as a mount would be a good reason… or maybe Titans =]
“Warhammer Online” and “Warhammer, Age of Reckoning” (WAR) are not the same game. Mythic Entertainment, who is developing WAR, did not pick up where Climax Studios left off. Climax folded their effort and GW approached Mythic (or vice-a-versa) and a NEW game was started.
From the WAR FAQ:
Is this the same Warhammer MMORPG I have heard about in the past from another developer?
No. That game has ceased development and the developer has moved on to other projects. This will be a next-generation MMORPG that will serve as the standard bearer for both Mythic and Games Workshop.
Now, will it be able to survive the uphill battle against WoW? No comment.
I can’t wait to see how the 40k MMO progresses though.
