My regular gaming group has got back into Flames of War in the last couple of months, so it’s time to paint some of our outstanding 15mm forces.
To motivate ourselves we’re putting a friendly painting challenge together: Each person has three months to paint the following:
- Three platoons – preferably an HQ, Combat platoon and Support Platoon, but any three outstanding unpainted platoons will do.
- 750 points of figures, or vehicles or platoons.
Or
The idea is to paint the core of a new army, and three platoons or 750pts is half of a 1500pt army! If you’re painting three platoons that also means you can aim to finish one each month of the challenge.
To give people some prep-time for assembling and basing their figures prior to starting the challenge we’re starting the challenge on the first of February. I’m also posting the challenge up here on the blog as an open invitation to any Flames of War gamers visiting to join the challenge.
One thing we will need from anybody that does want to join in is documentary evidence in the form of digital photos. We really only need two photos – one of your unpainted forces at the start, and one of the painted forces at the end! But I’m always keen to see in-progress photos myself.
Personally I need to get some paint on my assembled and mostly primed DAK Armored Company, that’s what you see in the photo above. I’ll be painting the following three platoons:
- HQ: Two IIIj Late Panzers.
- Combat: Three IIIj Late Panzers.
- Support: Divisional Heavy AA Gun Platoon (88’s!). Unlimbered only although I should get their transports painted too.
I’m considering throwing in a few prizes to motivate people if they’re interested. I was thinking either one of our 15mm straight trench kits, or a 15mm 1930’s building facade. Would that help people complete the challenge?
So who’s in?!

Count me in, though I might start a little earlier, especially as I have nothing primed yet…
Im in!
Not sure exactly what I’ll be painting yet, definitely Russian and it will involve tanks!
Lurked on this site for ages – I’m in.
Will be O/S for a couple of weeks late Feb but looking to complete a project asap so this will help. Working on a British 3rd Infantry force on D-day.
Hello Richard, nice to have you aboard! Seems we’re all assembling, basing and priming stuff ready for the 1st. Do you have a blog/site at all? I assume this isn’t your first FOW force since you’re playing Late War, or is it?
Hi Stu – I just started my first blog yesterday and am very new (and pretty clueless) about how to do that kind of stuff. However I’ve decided to give it a go. Your’s is the first blog I’ve ever really followed and been inspired by.
I’ve been into FOW since the early days and have a few different forces. I’ve always wanted to have a proper D-Day table and opposing forces and this is what I’m currently working on (when I’m not distracted doing something else – like my Puma list!)
I’ve done some writing for Battlefront and am a playtester as well so you could say I’m pretty heavily involved.
Anyway – I love you blog-site-whatever and am even going to try and use your molding tutorial soon to mass produce some bunkers so thanks.
I’m also a kiwi (in OZ) so thinky of Sir Ed today.
Catch ya
Richard
Nice to hear you’ve been inspired to start blogging! First and foremost I started this blog for myself, essentially as a diary so I could see my modeling progress and a place to gather handy references. It’s sort of just grown from there. Hard to believe it’s been online since Sept 2002.
I’ll be interested to see how your Sword Beach table goes. I can see a few challenging points to it (sea water effects mainly). I’m thinking of trying to put together a Stalingrad/Berlin ruined urban table myself sometime this year but have to knock a few other outstanding projects on the head first (as always)!
Yes, I’ve also got a Berlin style table planned (in my head anyway) as another project – maybe in a few years time!
My reason for starting a blog are very similar to yours – mainly as a diary of this and perhaps other projects. I’ll be very happy if I can keep it going – five plus years is very impressive.
Check out http://www.swordbeach.blogspot.com to see how I go.

OK, I’m in. I have got the basics to start on US armoured rifle platoon and will get some tanks and artillery for support. Time to do the maths…
A big thanks to yourself and Aaron for the game.
I have treated myself to an armoured rifle platoon box as well…
Ahhh nice! I do like opening those FOW boxed sets. What extra bits do you get in the Armored Rifle box? Some stowage for the half-tracks? Anything else?
Well, an AT gun and crew, decals but sadly no stowage. Luckily all the halftracks come with .30 or .50 cal MGs so I can make up the numbers for my “trade me” halftracks. One of the men is headless so a very bad start to the war for him!
But tis merely a flesh wound! Sounds like a mis-cast to me. I usually go through box sets looking carefully for mis-casts and other damage. Battlefront (the Flames of War people) are pretty good about replacing flawed figures.
Mind you if it’s just one guy maybe don’t sweat it. Nobody will notice if one base is missing a single guy.
