Would you play a Collectible Miniature Game?
* 71% (149) - Yes
* 29% (62) - No
I happily play a CCG (Collectible Card Game) amongst my friends, however CMGs (Collectible Miniature Games) like Pirates of the Spanish Main, Dreamblade and the recently announced Monsterpocalypse don’t really attract me at all. The problem with any collectible game was highlighted by the cancellation of Dreamblade late 2007. Once official support and tournaments for the game are gone, who really cares? Certainly you can still play the game yourself, but the money you’ve spent paying for rare and powerful figures or cards has been wasted because overnight their resale value becomes nil.
Also as a modeler I find the figures offered in CMGs universally poor in terms of casting and painting. Hence they have no intrinsic attraction that drives me to collect them. However it seems I’m in the minority in this respect judging from our last poll as two thirds of the visitors would happily play CMG games - which ones I wonder? Perhaps I’m not looking at the right games…
Our next poll relates to purchasing new games too. Locally here in New Zealand we’re facing something of an economic downturn, driven largely by the continued weakness of the greenback and the US sub-prime mortgage debacle which is driving local interest rates up, on the back of a bunch of 2007 hikes from our friendly reserve bank. This means salary earning mortgage holders like yours truly have been watching our spending in the last twelve months, and the first thing to get cut was hobby spending. Are you in the same boat?

Just waiting deliverie of 2 Arabian Maneaters and a Tyrant Ogre from Wellington, i only paid 94 dollars for them on Trade me , but my birthday is next month so … we just paid $42.50 for a 1/2 tank of petrol (no discount voucher from super markit ) 8-( not meny choc easter eggs for me !
Umm does Games Workshop count? bad molding change the rules every 5 years , and release NEW & improved modles for a different army each month … ;) ;-P So i can NEVER collect a full sett and spend days( fixing ) figurines so they look 1/2 all right only never actualy playing the best painted ones as a arny with 15 characters is not balanced .
I cant spend any more money on figures, not that I need to. my gaming is nearly nil, its all 40k and xbox is cheaper. call of duty 4 cost me $100 and I have got over 200 hours of play out of it so far.
$100 models would take me less than 24 hours to paint and it I doubt I would ever get another 176 hours before the rules change and the troops are obsolete.
I concur. I’m not playing GW’s main games any more but am going through my collection of unassembled/unpainted figures and thinking about building Necromunda warbands, finishing my three Mordheim warbands and just generally scratch building and converting stuff.
With the US economy in such dire straits and GW’s constant price increases and quality decreases I wonder how GW US’s bottom line is going to look in the next couple of financial years.
Plus I’m playing more Flames of War, 15mm is a much more economic scale to purchase…
I don’t do the collectible mini games anymore. I played MageKnight from cradle to grave and am a bit soured by the experience. It ends up being just as expensive if not more than traditional mini games anyways.
As for your second question, as a renter, I’m cheering for the US housing market to collapse harder and faster. Depending on how far prices fall, I may be able to afford a first house sometime in the next year or so.
Regardless, my gaming spending has not been affected yet. (knock on wood)
Well, it’s certainly an excellent time to be entering the housing market that’s true. Here in NZ the interest rates are pretty high (in excess of 10%) but in another year or so I suspect the housing market will have lost enough ground to make things attractive for first-time purchasers, even at those rates. Also one hopes they’re unlikely to go up again in the next year or so, meaning if you do your figures and can afford a house at those prices it’s win-win if/when? rates start to ease off.
For CMGs, I have played a little bit of Mageknight back when it was around, to try the idea. But the two CMGs I’ve really taken to the most are Heroclix (which I then lost interest in), and the Star Wars one, which is more a way just to get some Star Wars minis.
I also acquired a couple of packs of Pirates. Played it once. Stopped instantly, it was terrible.
That Monsterpocalypse looks funny, though.
