Eureka Miniatures 18mm Elves Eureka Miniatures recently released a new line of 18mm Fantasy Elves and Tabletop Gaming News posted about the release which was where I stumbled upon it. I was interested to see Eureka are an Australian manufacturer and actually do a whole line of 18mm Fantasy armies, from Orcs to Dwarves, from Centaurs to Men with large scale creatures thrown in.

The figures look reasonably well sculpted and both the scale and price is right for my tastes, however I have no idea what rule-set these figures are intended for? I assuming they’re designed to be used with Horde of the Things which is a Fantasy variant of the DBA Ancients rules.

Unfortunately after some searching I simply cannot find a distributor for these rules locally or on the web. The rules were created in 1991 so there’s a good chance they’re simply out of print! Can anybody suggest an Australian or New Zealand supplier that might carry a copy of Horde of the Things?

  1. Fantasy Rules! is another good set of rules for figures of that scale. It has a lot in common with Hordes of Things, but it has a little more detail.

The rules are downloadable as a pdf (costs $20 usd) from sabre’s edge games.

It was more popular 5-10 years ago, when they went to a pdf online format they took a big hit to their image/player base.

  2. Hi DarkWing, thanks for that link, it does look promising.

  3. Wow they got a good range of 28mm to, I can see I am going to buy some zombies, and a few of their modern range… They also have a whole bunch of swash buckling swrod fighters which would be good for gliore or whatever that pulp variant was.

  4. Iron Wind Metals has a free rules set called Iron Winds of War.

They are doing demos at Historicon this year that I am planning on checking out.

    Good find on the minis.

  5. Hah. Nice find Daniel. I just assumed nobody on TradeMe would be selling a copy. I bid. $20 is a bit more than I’d want to pay for a second hand copy of a decade old ruleset, but what the heck.

Also thanks for that link Brian, I’ve snagged a copy of the PDF and will have a look at it.

  6. Picked up that copy of HoTT btw so thanks for pointing it out Daniel.

  7. Hey! Thanks Richard! This post is a couple of years old, but I’ll still pick up a copy of HOTT.

My oldest son is reaching the age where Fantasy battles are interesting for him – we’ve played Song of Blade and Heroes a few times and he’s enjoyed it. HOTT seems like the next logical progression in a couple of years, going from Fantasy Skirmish to Fantasy massed battles.
