Tony, it's definitely nice to have choices, unfortunately living in New Zealand tends to limit what's available in the local hobby stores. It's Flames of War, Tamiya model paints or GW. I haven't bothered pricing up alternatives to those options until recently because my paint collection is simply too old, and it's simply too expensive to buy GW anymore. The last time I purchased any GW paint in volume, it was $4.95nzd per pottle.

I'm curious, what other brands are you using? I'm looking in particular or good ink washes (which Vallejo have, and in the past I've simply used Windsor & Newton inks mixed with floor polish). Have you tried the Army Painter 'Warpaints' at all?

I have never felt that I had to stick with just one manufacturer and have at least ten different brands of Acrylic paint on my workbench.

There are some GW paints - for example Snakebite Leather that I feel I just couldn't do with out but others like Black which I can pick and choose from.

The Vallejo Game Colour bottles are some of my favourites, but be aware that they still need shaking before use and can separate if left for a long time unused.

Good luck with the new paints and thank you for the post.

Guess I'm the late comer to this thread, I remember seeing your post a while back as Rich did, and was wondering if you ever did release the zelts for sale. As always the work is beautiful! Keep up the posts, it's been a great learning experience in casting and tinkering in the various scales!

Just to switch it up a bit etch prime is my prefered aerosol primer but i have recently taken to airbrushing as much as i can. To this end I use liqutex basic matt cut with tap water. I prime in all sorts of colours now and with a couple dust coats i get a solid colour that is resistant to handling and obscures no detail. Airbrushes are mafe of win!

I am a thoroughly impressed with your work on this model cathedral. I hope you are not going to just give this project away. I'd also like to learn more about the steps and processes it takes to make a terrain model like the one shown here...

Well first off I'd like to say that you've done an amazing job with this project thus far. I'd be more than happy to take that cathedral off of your hands if you are truly considering the thought of just giving it away. I play Mordheim regularly every Thursday night and that terrain piece would work out just wonderfully. I live in Fresno California and can be reached at the above email address. Thank you

Thanks for your comments gentlemen! Yes GW's prices are ridiculous these days. I abandoned their game systems years ago for cheaper, independent, lower figure count rulesets and was also pleasantly surprised to discover how these rulesets are often better constructed that GW's 40k and WHFB systems!

Thanks for the product tips as well, although as Dave mentions living in New Zealand, while it has lots of advantages does make it hard to secure certain hobbyist supplies. This is why we excell at finding cheap alternatives from less niche markets.

And as for cheap spray cans, I do prime most of my terrain with the cheapest flat black enamel spray I can find from the hardware store. It works particularly well in covering and sealing pieces of terrain made from hard plasters (Hirst Arts buildings etc). However for figures I'm always nervous about obscuring detail with a thick base coat and prefer white basing, so the 3M product is a fine replacement.

I find that the cheapest cans of flat, white spray paint are the best for priming miniatures. They packed full of accelerants so they really grab the metal or plastic very well and really do make for an excellent prime coat. Also, they only run about $3 USD.

A lot of you are probably very skeptical about this but I suggest you grab an old mini and try it out. It won't set you back very much.

I can agree; GW's prices are out of control....as sales drop, their idiotic accountants solution? Raise prices!

Anyway, I love the vallejo primers, and use them.

Also, I find that I like the white Armory primer; it goes on thin and covers well, although I do not know if you can get it in your area.
http://www.thewarstore.com/armoryspraypaints.html

finally, I also sometimes use a VERY THIN coat/dusting of white primer from home improvement stores.

thank you for sharing you story.

Check out the Vallejo acrylic primer (http://www.acornmodels.co.nz/products/paint-glues-finish-material/vallejo-model-colour-paint/67942/). It also airbrushes very well.

This isn't an architectural model, this is a roughly 10cm high piece of war gaming terrain, designed to be hit by a hammer, like this:

http://www.tabletop-terrain.com/stu/products/15mmBuildingCorner.JPG

So yes, it's entirely possible the entablature and flat shaft of the column don't align visually. It's also possible I'm ill informed.

The entablature and the flat shaft of the column do not align visually; this would never happen on a building set to any classical order (except by someone who was ill informed).
