Modelling - Ruined Windmill

Windmill Windmill Windmill Windmill progress

Started: 21 Jul 2003
Completed: 31 Aug 2003
Measurements: It's on the standard MDF base size I use and is around under a foot high.
Material: Balsa wood, Hirst Art blocks, Tamiya sandbags and brass model ship nails.
Base: 3mm MDF as usual.
Detail: Inspired by the Hirst Arts 4" Fieldstone Tower mold I've had kicking around my garage for a while and possibly some vague memories of the movie 'Moulin Rouge'. I thought a ruined Windmill would be kind of a nifty thing to have so started constructing one. The only real difficulty is the Hirst Arts 4" Tower mold only leaves a 3" circle of internal space as the walls are 1/2" thick. I do wonder if the larger 6" Tower mold would have been a better investment for Mordheim terrain.

Those are green rubber bands holding on the balsa platforms while the glue dries too btw, they will not be present in the finished piece. The real question is how to detail the base. I'm thinking so rubble, some balsa scraps and maybe a barrel or two and some hand made sacks. Sacks could be tricky, I've tried these in the past for 40k terrain and wasn't really that happy with the results. In the end I resorted to using several Tamiya WWII plastic sandbags.

The Windmill is constructed in two parts for ease of painting. The Hirst Arts tower forms the base with a core contructed from glued and pinned (with dress-maker's pins) balsa wood. The parts were slotted together and glued once complete.
